There was quite a stir in the blogworld when BONO defined philanthropist as sexy at the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. I simply fell in love with this notion. Philanthropy is often seen as all the other ‘S’s’ – submissive, soft, self-sacrificing but definitely not sexy.
During the month of February Catalyst Concierge has partnered with Keep a Child Alive, an organization supported by some of the world’s sexiest celebrities including Alicia Keys, Cher, Iman, Sheryl Crow, and Bono, to pay special tribute to the 15 million children in sub-Saharan Africa who are orphans because their parents have died of AIDS – many of them forced to raise their brothers and sisters in the most difficult circumstances. My totally god-fearing mother literally cringed when she saw the Valentine’s Day campaign online. “THE POWER OF SEXY!!!!” She screamed over the telephone as I was on my way to meet with a client.
The fact is humans have this innate need to feel desirable – from the adolescent boy glaring in the mirror with a handful of mousse for that perfect spike haired look, the middle aged person who mulls over choices of hair clinics and wrinkle reducer products, the football star whose home has been converted to a shrine for trophies and accolades to remind him of how desirable he is, the 18 year old who wants to get a nose and boob job for her 19th birthday, to the dejected divorcee who has bought himself a brand new red Ferrari after a grueling divorce in his effort to command new and often younger female attention by the droves. So I say yes, yes to the POWER OF SEXY - it makes us feel good about ourselves, but there are so many other ways to be SEXY.
The need to be desirable is so important to us that we go through our entire lives trying to capture this feeling, never noticing that it is closer to our grasp than we think – it is in our hearts.
We have been taught that is good to give from our hearts, to listen to our hearts, to speak from our hearts and even do what your heart desires – well that’s where the feeling of SEXY dwells.
One dictionary defines sexy as 'sensual in behaviour'. And it continued to define sensual as 'the passion of the body'. Passion’s residence is our hearts – passion for travel, passion for food, passion for luxury, passion for people; and so is love’s – love of country, love of God, love of people. It has been medically proven that hormones and neuron-peptides are pumped from the brain through our hearts. Hormones send signals to our hearts that emit feelings of love, desirability, passion and even hate.
While it is true that some people give to impress and to boost their social status, studies have proven that many people truly give from their hearts and are driven by empathy. The feeling of empathy is driven from the brain's oxcytocin hormone which is pumped through our hearts. This hormone facilitates the passion of our bodies, our social interactions and bonding with our partners, children, friends and fans. Our heart is therefore the seat of our desires and emotions.
I see philanthropists as very interesting, noble and sexy human beings. Once again, why sexy? Because they give from that place where sexy dwells – their hearts. Isn’t it POWERFUL? Sexy reaches far beyond feelings we get from an Armani suit or those proudly displayed trophies and accolades. Sexy? Yes sexy! Sexy is your heart in red nine inch stilettos. Sexy is your heart in that hot red Ferrari. Sexy is the modern day do-gooder. “It is sexy to want to change the world.” And so a new definition of sexy is born!
